Our client, a global organisation in the media business, had a strategy to increase the use of cloud.
They had already begun with the migration from on-premises Exchange to Office 365. The client now wanted to look at their applications which were running on around 45-50 on-premise servers, predominantly virtualised on VMware, across a number of sites.
They wanted to understand how they could transform their applications into cloud whilst reducing operational overhead and retaining only a minimum number of on-premise servers.
Asset discovery and workshop
FutureProof ran a Cloud Adoption Workshop with the client’s key technology stakeholders to understand the application estate and produce an actionable roadmap to cloud. This follows a standard, well-tested FutureProof approach and included:
Applications overview and current state assessment
Applications in use and their purpose.
Current deployment methods – SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, on-premise
Key technologies used – O/S, Database, Application, Messaging
Security and Patch Management technologies
Infrastructure deployment and Management technologies
User and end user computing
Locations, user volumes, end user devices
Business continuity requirements
Levels and mechanisms for the core/key/main platforms
Identify current pain points that require resolution
A discovery was run by interrogating vCenter to discover the virtual servers, their specifications and utilisation. As is FutureProof’s preferred approach, no agents were installed on the servers to gather this information.
Roadmap and recommendations
Following the workshop FutureProof’s consultants documented the application estate and made recommendations for transformation options aligned to the 6Rs. Options included Replacement with SaaS, Rehosting onto cloud, and Re-architecting into cloud.
As the client wanted to simplify their estate and reduce operational tasks such as patch management, one key recommendation was the replacement of SQL servers with hosted database such as Amazon RDS or Azure Database.
Use of a cloud-based Virtual Tape Library with the existing backup software was identified as an effective migration path away from physical tapes and backup to on-premise NAS.
FutureProof advised on the current state assessment and future state recommendations including different cloud platform options, this was delivered via a detailed walkthrough session with the client.
In light of the client’s extensive Microsoft estate and vendor familiarity Microsoft Azure was chosen as the target cloud platform.
A prioritised roadmap was produced with an actionable plan for cloud adoption. FutureProof provides continued support to the client on their cloud adoption activities.
